how do you tell the difference between a bad shot and a good one?
Bad is easy to tell - there is no interesting element to the image. Not composition, color or emotional content. Now subjective Good photos from true quality Good photos is a much harder distinction for me. The images I take that I think are technically superior are the ones that don't really engage me. I like this image. It's quirky. I think it's a very bloggy photo because it tells me a story. Actually I guess that's starting to touch on a personal litmus test I have. There are photos that I think are blog worthy and photos I think are gallery worthy and then others that are print worthy. I guess it's the few photos that are all three that are really the "good" photographs, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the others.
Sorry, Ciscley, I have to disagree with you. A good photograph is one you like. Emphasis on *you*. It's like asking someone what kinds of books are good... hell, I think murder mysteries are good, and romances suck. My sister loves trashy romance, and hates poetry. My dad loves poetry, and hates murder mysteries. So, you tell me, which is a good book and which isn't? Photography is completely, 100%, in the eye of the beholder. The most you can expect from a critic is an "I don't like that." If there's no "I" in their comments, ignore it completely.
